What is the difference between tar and asphalt?
Tar is a mixture of stone and bitumen and has an even grained appearance. Asphalt is a mixture of sand, lime and bitrumen. It is smooth and generally has white limestone chips or black precoated chips rolled into it.

Is tarmac available in different colours?
Yes - red, yellow and blue. However, the material price rises by an average of £100 per tonne.

Can you lay tar in all weather conditions?
Yes... almost. In hot weather there are no adverse effects on the tar. In addition, cold weather is fine as long as the air temperature is one degree celsius on a rising thermometer. Finally, light rain showers are acceptable, prolonged heavy rain is not and may lead to standing water.

How long before I can walk or drive on tar or asphalt?
When the material has cooled. This is generally around one hour after rolling is complete.
